New Permanent Site Of KASU Is Taking Shape

Our Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, this afternoon performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the permanent site of the Kaduna State University (KASU) in Rigachikun, Igabi LGA.Here is the speech read by Dr. Hadiza Balarabe at the event…I am delighted to be in Rigachikun for this momentous occasion in the journey of the Kaduna State University (KASU) towards the greatness to which it aspires. In conceiving of this permanent site and dedicating the resources to make it happen, the Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has demonstrated his clear commitment to KASU and its future prospects as a place of learning.Since 2015, the focus of the Kaduna State Government on human capital development has come to be recognised as a pillar of our Putting People First governance agenda. Central to this has been a relentless drive to expand access to Education and Health. It is no accident that these two sectors consistently account for the biggest chunk of our annual budget. In Education, we have prioritised the first 12 years of education, making education free and compulsory till the completion of secondary school. This has necessitated a continuous effort to reverse the consequences of decades of neglect of the sector. The state government continues to invest in renovating schools and building new schools and classrooms where necessary.Technical and vocational education is receiving similar attention, as is the prime question of of empowering our people with the skills for the 21st Century. We are convinced that tertiary education will continue to play an important role in producing highly skilled human resources. This will require investments in facilities and the better faculty, a reimagining of the curriculum and more resources for research. Schools at every level must deliver learning, disciplined habits of thought and creative capacity to see and solve problems. Possession of a certificate is no longer a signifier of the presence of these attributes in the bearer. We must restore the fit.Today, we signal our commitment to enabling KASU to be at forefront of the revolution in higher education in Nigeria. We pay tribute to our predecessors who founded this university which has until now functioned from a main campus in Kaduna and the Kafanchan campus. During our first term, we adopted a multicampus policy for all state-owned tertiary institutions, to further expand access to these schools. As part of our own stewardship of KASU, we have decided to move its main campus to this vast land in Rigachikun, a step forward from the limited space in which its Kaduna campus began. As is evident, the Kaduna State Government is already committing resources to this project. I am certain that the possibilities in this new site will further inspire and challenge the management of KASU to partner private and public institutions to fund and locate projects here.I appeal to our development partners and friends in the corporate world to support our drive to build a world-class university.I also like to thank everyone for joining and supporting us in this ground breaking ceremony.Thank you and God bless.Courtesy: Mine Governor, Mallam Nasir Elrufai
