The Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kaduna State Command, Alhaji Babangida Abdullahi Dutsinma has said that, as part of efforts of Kaduna State Command to ensure protection of lives and properties in the state, residents of some parts of the state which are vulnerable to flood are usually sensitized on recurring flood.
In his address at the occasion of the commemoration of International Civil Defence Day held at the state headquarters, on Monday, Commandant Dutsinma mentioned places flood pro- areas such as, Kigo Road, Tudun-wada, Ungwan-Rimi and Kamazou among others.
According to him, “with the logistics support of the Federal, State and Local governments, I want to assure you that high performance remains our priority”
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Civil Defence and a First Aider in Every Home”, he explained that, even though we have not attained the level we wish, we shall continue to strive until purposeful result is achieved.
Hear him, “March 1st, every year is marked as world Civil Defence day.
“The commemoration of this event dates back to 1972 with the inauguration of the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
“Nigeria being the 66th member of the organization, the celebration of this event is also observed annually just like other member countries.
” This is in recognition of nation’s membership status which dates back to 2004, a year after the passage of the NSCDC Act 2003 which gave legislative backing to the corps as a full parliamentary outfit.
“Consequently, the corps is known and charged with responsibilities of disaster management which entails sensitization of the civil populace in times of danger, rescue of victims and providing first aid remedies for those affected.
“Statutorily, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps is tasked by law to provide 24hour surveillance on critical national infrastructure whether they are for federal, state or local governments or private to prevent same from activities of vandals.”
According to him, the corps is solely charged with the responsibility of regulating activities of private Guard Companies adding that, the Act of National Assembly also empowers the corps to perform complementary functions such as intelligence gathering, ensuring law and other generally.
“Further, our duties are extended to the protection of solid minerals which also yield good economic returns.
“In Kaduna State, as a deliberate strategy in accomplishing the above, the command works in synergy with sister agencies while I consciously extend my willingness to collaborate with law abiding people of the state towards ensuring protection of lives and property.
“In doing this, operatives of the command are deployed either to work assiduously independent as a corps or in synergy with others.
“The current deployment of personnel to Golden Acres located at Kilometer 52, Kaduna-Abuja Express Way, Operations thunder Strike and Operations Yaki among others for internal security is yielding gradual results even though much is still expected.
“efforts are intensified in preventing or controlling incidence of disasters like fire through advocacy and sensitization of the populace.” He further said
